Today we review the architectural style of some houses whose trend was inspired by the English constructions of medieval times: the Tudor houses. This architectural trend was renewed in the mid-19th century, and they became wildly popular in the United States.

This style evokes romantic British country houses and their picturesque appearance makes them look like true fairytale houses. Being houses designed to better withstand cold, snow and rain, they have always been characteristic of the northern areas.

Tudor houses are built with a large number of materials. Its forms are very elaborate and the masonry very solid. In the 1920s, they were dubbed "the houses of stockbrokers", since their high construction price made them only accessible to some sectors of the population.

The exterior of these houses is very distinctive and they are relatively easy to recognize. Its facades are asymmetrical and built in brick, mostly, which is combined with decorative wooden frameworks filled with stucco. The roofs have several sloping gables facing the front. They are very sloping roofs distributed in various heights.

Another distinctive element of this architectural style are the chimneys. They have numerous decorative accessories made of metal or stone on brick. Also doors are peculiar in Tudor houses. They have an arch at the top and decorated with motifs made of stone on the brick of the fa├žade.

Another remarkable feature are the windows. Tudor houses have beautiful medieval-inspired windows, arranged by groups of three or more windows together. The windows are tall and narrow, and sometimes diamond-shaped. They are made up of multiple panels. We can also find floating windows on the upper floors, very characteristic of this style, which are known as gazebos.

The style of the Tudor houses is adorable, romantic, very English and nostalgic. But in reality they are houses of very robust and elaborate construction. They emulate the medieval houses of the 16th century, but totally modernized. This architectural style has its focus on details and craftsmanship. Hence its picturesque image.

Tudor houses typically have two stories. The asymmetrical facades hide an interior with a very asymmetrical distribution as well. This characteristic was intended to imitate the original construction of medieval houses that were made in several phases and with several added areas.

The interior of Tudor houses

If you like interiors with dark woods, this is definitely your style. Tudor house interiors use this material for countless architectural and decorative elements.

The roofs of Tudor houses are known as cathedral roofs, because they mimic the roofs of Gothic cathedrals. They are very tall and the supports are large wooden beams that also serve as an ornamental element. In addition to the exposed beams, the ceilings were painted in dark colors that resembled the color of the wood of the beams. Although in a more updated style they can be painted in light colors to avoid that the rooms are too dark.

Interior walls often look the same as exterior walls, with wooden and stucco rails running through brick or stone walls. Very characteristic of Tudor houses is also the cladding of the interior walls with dark wood paneling in the form of squares or rectangles. And although this style originally proposed walls painted white, the more modern versions show strong colors, such as dark and muted green on the walls that are not covered with wood.

A style that was lost in the 1940s

The construction of Tudor houses, their complexity and their high cost for the average citizen ended up relegating this architectural style after World War II. New siding techniques and materials made home construction more accessible, and eventually Tudor homes were discontinued in the United States.

During the period from 1915 to 1940, Tudor homes accounted for 25% of all homes built in the United States. By ceasing to be used as an architectural style, these houses are of great historical value today.
